One of the traditional Judaic manifestations of blotting out the existence of Haman, the mitzvah of noisemaking on Purim, is accomplished by writing Haman’s name on the sole of one’s shoe and erasing his presence as one walks. Avi takes this tradition and modernizes it: he created a rubber stamp with erasers spelling out the verse “…I will utterly blot out…” that one can stamp on Hamen’s name. Furthering the artist’s metaphor protesting against bureaucracy, Avi believes that we should all strive to erase the injustice of bureaucracy. To add further noise and mayhem, Avi has inserted into the grogger ten pieces of silver symbolizing the ten evil sons of Haman.
